Use multiple physical markers together. Color alone is unreliable after capture and varies with light, age, stress, and habitat.
Usually lacks spots and has a longer, straighter anal fin.
Square or rounded tail and a shorter, stockier body.
Channel edges, flats, submerged cover, current breaks, and scent lanes near bottom.
Warm water increases feeding activity; local reservoirs can produce year-round near deeper channels.
General California planning pattern. Conditions, migration, stocking, closures, and exact water can override it.
Scent-driven feeder that becomes more active in warm water and low light.
Fish, insects, crayfish, mollusks, and organic forage.
Scented soft bait or slow bottom presentation.
Cut bait, nightcrawler, shrimp, or prepared stink bait.
Place bait on an edge, not randomly across a flat
Use enough weight to hold position in current
Let a circle-hook rig load before applying pressure
Reel Fishing Society intentionally does not hard-code possession limits here. Rules can change by date, species, exact water, management area, depth, gear, method, emergency action, or protected-area boundary.
