01 · POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION

Know what you’re looking at.

Use multiple physical markers together. Color alone is unreliable after capture and varies with light, age, stress, and habitat.

Field marks

  1. 01Both eyes on one side of a flattened body
  2. 02Large mouth with sharp teeth
  3. 03Dark mottled upper side and pale underside

Lookalike check

Pacific halibut

Typically diamond-shaped, broader, and associated with colder northern water.

Diamond turbot

Smaller mouth, rounder outline, and a different eye-side pattern.

Range + habitat

Baja California north through California, with the core recreational fishery centered on Southern and Central California.

Sand, mud, eelgrass edges, harbor channels, beaches, and coastal flats from shallow water to deeper nearshore structure.

02 · SEASONAL PLANNING PATTERN

When the pattern tends to build.

Often strongest as nearshore water warms and bait concentrates; local bays can produce outside the broad peak.

LOWER RELATIVE ACTIVITYBROADER PEAK

General California planning pattern. Conditions, migration, stocking, closures, and exact water can override it.

03 · PURSUIT SYSTEM

Find the food. Match the zone.

An ambush predator that lies concealed on the bottom and intercepts bait moving across edges and current lanes.

FORAGE

What it eats

Anchovy, sardine, smelt, grunion, squid, and small bottom fish.

ARTIFICIAL

Lure starting point

Paddletail swimbait, jerk shad, hard jerkbait, or slow-trolled baitfish profile.

NATURAL

Live + frozen bait

Live sardine, anchovy, smelt where legal, or responsibly handled frozen bait.

FIELD SEQUENCETHREE WAYS TO START
01

Drift a bait just above bottom across a channel edge

02

Fan-cast a swimbait and maintain occasional bottom contact

03

Slow-troll along sand-to-eelgrass transitions
